Bosch receives orders amounting to 13 billion euros in electromobility

Stuttgart / Frankfurt - Bosch is in the fast lane for electric mobility. No other company has comparable know-how in this area. It pays off: since the beginning of 2018, Bosch has received orders worth around 13 billion euros in electromobility, including series projects for the electric drive of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. With these successes and thanks to its innovative strength, Bosch is asserting itself in a currently difficult environment. The Mobility Solutions business unit is once again outperforming 2019 in global automotive production. The division's operating revenue will only be slightly below the previous year's level, despite the current sharp decline in the market. "The transformation of mobility poses challenges - but also opportunities. We want to use them, "says Dr. Volkmar Denner, Chairman of the Bosch Board of Management. Bosch is approaching the future of mobility in a technology-oriented way, developing conventional drives and pushing ahead with electrification. At the same time, the company is driving forward the automation, networking and personalization of mobility. One key is electronics and software. Currently, the mobility business is well-capitalized by 14 000 software developers and invests three billion euros a year in software expertise. The goal: to enable people to stay mobile in harmony with the environment and to be able to afford mobility. "Bosch makes mobility climate-friendly and affordable," says Denner.

Efficient drives: from the burner to the fuel cell

Bosch is moving forward with climate protection - not just with the CO2 neutral setting of all locations worldwide from next year. "We are also working hard on a mobility that has no significant adverse effects on the climate and air quality," Denner continues. The company invests 400 million euros annually in emission-free mobility. In electric mobility, Bosch is already as broad-based as no other company - from the bike to the truck, from the lightweight 48-Volt hybridization to the all-electric drive. With its 48-Volt battery, Bosch is aiming for a leading position in the market and has now signed a long-term cooperation with the Chinese Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) for the corresponding battery cells. Bosch anticipates that sales of five billion euros in 2025 with components and systems from the area of electromobility for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, which are forecast at the beginning of the year, are expected to surpass them. "No matter how we technically implement zero-emission mobility, we have to push it through the market. That will only succeed with affordable solutions. Otherwise, the climate would not help, "adds Denner. On the way to market leadership in electromobility, Bosch is also pushing ahead with the mass suitability of fuel cells and entering series production. Among other things, economies of scale will help to produce the still expensive technology more cheaply. "Bosch makes alternative drive systems affordable," stresses Denner.

New technology: fewer particles, less brake dust

But 2030 will also have three out of four new vehicles a conventional drive under the hood, parts of it with electrified support by an 48-volt system or as a plug-in hybrid. That's why Bosch is making gasoline more efficient, as well as diesel. Recent progress: With internal engine measures and modern exhaust aftertreatment gasoline engines can fall below the particle limit value of the Euro-6d-temp standard in real operation by up to 70 percent. Bosch also wants to minimize the particulate emissions caused by braking. Thus, the iDisc produces up to 90 percent less brake dust compared to a conventional brake disc. Bosch's regenerative braking system can reduce brake particles in electrified vehicles by more than 95 percent.

Milestone: first level 4 system receives approval

Bosch also achieves great business success in automated driving. The basis for this is driver assistance systems. In this area, Bosch is expanding by 12 percent in the current year, with sales of two billion euros. For further development towards automated driving, the company is investing four billion euros up to 2022. For the American and Asian markets, Bosch is currently developing Level 2 hands-free systems - highway assistants, which make it possible to take their hands off the steering wheel. Bosch and Daimler recently received the world's first approval for a Level 4 system in Germany: for the Automated Valet Parking in the parking garage of the Stuttgart Mercedes-Benz Museum. The fully automated ancestor and parking service is no longer a prototype. By the end of 2021, a dozen additional parking garages will be equipped with automated valet parking.

Tailored Mobility: Shuttle Services and Rolling Chassis'

The change in the mobility industry is creating new market players. Bosch is also opening up business with these players. The company is working with the three largest Ride-Hailing providers, DiDi, Lyft and Uber, which together deliver more than 50 millions of journeys per day worldwide. Leading Chinese mobility provider DiDi, for example, uses Bosch cloud-based battery services to extend the life of vehicle batteries.

In the future, such mobility service providers will increasingly offer tailor-made on-demand mobility via shuttles. For example, more than 2025 million shuttle vehicles will be on the road worldwide until 2,5. Bosch wants to enable these providers with its solutions for electrification, automation, networking and personalization to offer driving services with maximum comfort and maximum safety. The basis of such shuttles can form rolling chassis - mobile modular platforms on which flexible bodies can be built. At the beginning of the year, Bosch started a cooperation with the chassis and automotive expert Benteler. Automobili Pininfarina will be the first customer to use the Rolling Chassis for its own vehicles and to further distribute it.

Mobility Solutions is the largest division of the Bosch Group. He contributed 2018 with 47,6 billion 61 percent to sales. This makes the technology company one of the leading suppliers to the automotive industry. Mobility Solutions pursues the vision of accident-free, emission-free and inspiring mobility of the future and bundles its expertise in the three domains - automation, electrification and networking. The area offers holistic mobility solutions to its customers. The main business areas are: injection technology and ancillary components for internal combustion engines as well as various solutions for the electrification of the drive, vehicle safety systems, assistance and automation functions, technology for user-friendly infotainment and vehicle-to-vehicle communication, workshop concepts as well as technology and service for the motor trade. Major automotive innovations such as electronic engine management, ESP centrifugal protection or common-rail diesel technology come from Bosch.
