His German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized on the occasion of the signing that "respect for human rights, the protection of the indigenous population and the consideration of environmental and social standards" are part of the contract.
Environmental and human rights activists from Misereor and Germanwatch criticized the contract. They pointed to human rights violations in Peru and drew attention to environmental hazards through the extraction of raw materials.
