Rio Tinto places orders with CIMIC Robe Valley

Rio Tinto has selected the CIMIC Group's CPB contractors to deliver three different service packages in the Robe Valley, Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The projects are valued at $ 150 million and include various earthworks and construction work related to the development of the Robe Valley.

Rio Tinto and Japanese joint venture partners Mitsui and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal approved investments of $ 1,55 billion to maintain the production capacity of their Robe River joint venture late last year.

The investment resulted in the development of deposits in the Robe Valley to enable sustainable production of the locations. Instead of the expected social and economic growth of the location for the nearby communities, Rio Tinto and CIMIC are now further developing their opportunities with the contracts in the Robe Valley.

Michael Wright, Chief Executive Officer of the CIMIC Group, said, “The CIMIC Group companies have a strong track record of completing major projects for the iron industry.

“With our decades of experience in the Pilbara, we offer large mining customers security and confidence in construction, mining and industrial services”.

CPB Contractors General Manager Juan Santamaria said: “We are excited to take on one of the largest and most important mining operations in Australia.

The projects in the Robe Valley, located approximately 140 kilometers southwest of Karratha, will include earthworks, road, bridge and mine construction, water supply infrastructure, and site set-up and demobilization.

The projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2021, which requires close coordination with Rio Tinto and other companies working on the construction site.
