ThyssenKrupp has released the investment funds to build a new, state-of-the-art processing plant for packaging steel at the Andernach site. This creates the necessary technical prerequisite for a new process for producing chrome-plated surfaces on packaging steel. At the same time, health and environmental protection measures will be further improved. The new procedure replaces the previous mode of production, which will no longer be allowed in the future due to the EU-wide ban on chromium (VI) compounds in production processes. Finishing with chrome is one of the most important production stages at thyssenkrupp in Andernach in order to produce high-quality, printable packaging.

Sustainable and competitive packaging steel from Andernach

With its completion, the new finishing plant will be the most modern production line of its kind and will set standards in the fields of process safety, quality, environmental protection and occupational safety.

As the most recycled packaging material, packaging steel has great future potential in terms of sustainability. For more than 10 years, packaging steel in Germany has consistently exceeded the recycling quotas demanded in the future. Thyssenkrupp is contributing to this by ensuring that the recycling loop of packaging steel in Germany is secured by return systems - partly by its own customers, such as the German tinplate recycling company and partly by co-operated ones, such as Blechverpackungen Stahl GmbH.
