Representatives from nine EU countries decide on work program in the BMWi

Nine European states have at the 4. September in Berlin, the work program for a second European battery group decided. At a European workshop at the 4. In September, battery cell production at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) was attended by representatives of governments and some 30 companies from France, Poland, Italy, Finland, Belgium, Sweden, Slovakia, Spain and Germany. The work program determines which tasks along the value chain are to be undertaken by the companies involved.

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier: "Germany and Europe must in the future also develop and produce competitive, innovative and environmentally friendly battery cells. Yesterday we came a good deal closer to this goal. Within only one year, we succeeded in putting two major European projects for battery cell production on the rails. It shows the power that European Member States and companies can muster together in a complex industrial environment. "

The Federal Ministry of Economics is currently coordinating two major projects for battery cell production with the European Commission and other EU countries. They are to be realized as so-called "Important Projects of Common European Interest" (IPCEI). German companies play a major role in both projects. To accompany the process from the start, the European Commission was also present at yesterday's workshop.

The goal of the initiative is a functioning ecosystem for battery production - from the processing of raw materials through battery cell production to recycling. The "Made in Europe" battery cells are set to build on their own innovations and set new standards in the CO2 intensity and sustainability of the batteries.

To build a battery cell production, the BMWi provides a billion euros. The funding should contribute to maintaining and building value added and jobs in Germany and Europe. In Germany, there should be a special focus on projects in structural change regions. A first project in which a Franco-German consortium is involved was already presented and prenotified to the European Commission in June.
